The Institute of Intelligent Machines(IIM) , Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS), was founded on October 8, 1979. It lies in the east of the Science Island, Hefei, China, a peninsula well-known for its fantastic location, beautiful scenery, harmonious humanities environments and strong academic atmosphere. IIM’s predecessor was East China Institute of Components and Instruments for Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, which was established in the 1950' s. After efforts of several generations of scientists, IIM has developed to be a research institute that works for scientific research and high-tech application, as well as postgraduate education.
IIM is one of the most important research divisions of Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Focusing on the areas of sensor technology and artificial intelligence，IIM insists of four research branches: Research Center for Biomimetic Sensing and Control, Research Center for Biomimetic Functional Materials and Sensing Devices, Research Center for Intelligent Information Systems and Research Center for Information Technology of Sports and Health. It also has two administration offices: Office of General Affairs and Office of Research-project Management. The Office of General Affairs includes editorial offices of International Journal of Information Acquisition(IJIA, published abroad) and the Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence(PR&AI, indexed by EI Compendex) .
IIM, dedicated to the national critical scientific areas, such as biomimetic sensing, information acquisition, digital agriculture intelligence system, intelligent detection and control and micro-nano technology, strives to provide the advanced theory, technology and system of information acquisition and intelligent decision for improvement and sustainable development of environment. In recent 30 years, IIM has undertaken almost one thousand research projects from Natural Science Foundation of China, National “ 863” and “973” Programs and International Science and Technology Cooperation Program etc, and significant scientific and technological achievements have been obtained. IIM has won nearly 100 science and technology awards, including the second class of National Science and Technology Progress Reward, World Summit Award，and Science and Technology Progress Award of Anhui Province. With the further development of Knowledge Innovation Program, IIM has constantly improved the quantity and the quality of both science research projects and scientific and technological achievements, thus maintaining its vigor and growth momentum.
IIM has a large group of highly competent research scientists and administration staff. At present, over one fourth of staff members assume vice-senior title and two thirds of the staff have master degree or above. Besides, many Distinguished Visiting Professors, Honorary Professors and Senior Visiting Scholars have joined the institute.
Graduate education is an important component and one of IIM’s outstanding features. IIM has carried out CAS’ policy of “integrating each of its departments with relevant CAS research institutes” by actively participating the innovation of higher education system and co-constructed educational bases for graduate students’ with University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei Institutes of Physical Science and Anhui University. The institute offers master and PhD programs in Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Systems, Instrumentation Technology and Automatic Devices,Precision Instrument and Machine and Information Acquisition and Control etc. IIM now has 50 supervisors, including 21PhD supervisors. There are currently 200 students studying for their master and doctoral degrees, who have been a new force of scientific research for IIM.
IIM has successively hosted IEEE International Conference on Information Acquisition and also Intelligent Computing, which have some influence in their areas, and established collaborations for academic co-operation and exchange activities with famous national and international research institutes. Well-known scholars and experts at home and abroad are invited to give lectures.
IIM attaches great importance to high-technology transfer, which is the center source of the transformation and industrialization of the research products. It now has 6 fully-owned enterprises and joint stock enterprises, five of which are located in the national High and New Technology Development Zone, Hefei, China. One of them is the listed company of Shanghai market.
According to the National science and technology development strategies and the Knowledge Innovation Program of CAS, IIM strives to accelerate the development of various undertakings, making it comprehensive, balanced and sustainable under theguidance of new leaders.
